Dubai's man-made islands: everything you need to know

Dubai, one of the fastest growing cities in the world is a paradise for those who want quick changes with their things. The vigorous change that happened in the last 50 years in UAE is something no one would ever think of, Dubai being the finest of all.

Dubai is visited by millions of travellers every year and everyone doesn’t expect to get enthralled by the beauty and innovations UAE has to offer. From Burj Khalifa which heights 2717 feet and is the highest building in the world to the recently opened Dubai frame which has a glass floor and is shaped like a frame.

Dubai’s skyscrapers and innovations on land is reputed among the world and now the city is having man-made land to ensure they lack in nothing. YES, man-made is the right word.

To pique the tourism in the city and to extend the coastline, the Prime Minister and Emir of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum took the responsibility and started the project of man-made coastline and islands.

The projects started during 2000-2006 and due to the financial crisis in 2008, many of the projects halted and the construction stopped, still Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that the projects will resume as soon as possible and gave the title ‘Long Term Projects’.

The man-made archipelagos and coastlines, some of which are still under construction are Palm Jumeirah, Deira Islands, Palm Jebel Ali, The World, Bluewaters Island, Marsa Al Arab.

How It’s Made

The process of Land Reclamation is followed to make this project possible. The project was undertaken bydifferent construction companies like Nakheel Properties, Kleindienst Group, and got united with Jumeirah Group for the services provision on the Land.

Following the process of Land Reclamation, the sand from Persian and Arabian Gulf Floors was dredged out and sprayed over the waters and was vibro-compacted to give the desired shape and using millions of tons of rock for protection.

GPS technology was used to shape the archipelagos in desired shape. Thousands of trucks and carriers were used during the process and the spraying machines and other services were ordered from different parts of the world.

Palm Jumeirah

The most famous of all, Palm Jumeirah is a shaped like a palm tree and is created by Nakheel Industries. Located on Jumeirah coastal area in UAE, the Palm Jumeirah when combined with other two Palm Jebel Ali& Palm Deira will make the Palm Islands and will increase the coastline of Dubai by 520 Km or 320 miles in total.

The Palm Jumeirah consists of a trunk with 17 fronds and is home to the famous Atlantis Hotel, a luxurious hotel dotted like many others on the island. The project commenced on 2001.

Visitors can explore the island through different ways. A vehicle can be taken on the islands to see the housing and buildings available till Atlantis Hotel situated at the end.

A 5.4 KM long monorail can be boarded to experience the high view of the island and the beach houses made for residential purpose. The monorail goes till The Atlantis Hotel and the water-adventure park near it from the foot of the island, Gateway Towers.

The topmost frond can be accessed by an underwater tunnel connecting the crescent and the frond island. Also if you want to explore the real view of the island then go for skydiving, if you are adventurous enough (Also if budget is high). Fall with a speed of 120 miles/second and witness the view like few.

The palm Jumeirah houses over 5000 residential houses out of which around 2000 are Villas. There are over 40 Hotels and restaurants available. The most famous spot is Nakheel Mall which was opened recently in 2018.

Palm Jebel Ali

Another archipelago project started by Nakheel Industries in 2002 was Palm Jebel Ali. The project involved a plan to construct a palm shaped islands which will be 50 % larger than Palm Jumeirah and would be able to house more than 250,000 people.

The Fronds of the island will be circled by a broadwalk which will spell out an Arabic Poem written by the Emir of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Due to the 2008 financial crisis in UAE, the construction of the archipelago stopped and the Nakheel declared the construction to be ‘Long Term’ but not stopped.

The new schedule confirms the completion of the project by 2021 and on completion, the island will be twice the six of Palm Jumeirah and will have homes built on stilts, a water theme park named Sea Village, six marinas and other attractions.

Deira Islands

Earlier the part of the Palm Islands Project, Nakheel declared the project of Palm Deira in 2004. In 2013, due to some circumstances, Nakheel changed their mind and declared the construction of 4 smaller islets called Deira Islands. The island will house over 250,000 people.

The original project of Palm Deira was supposed to be 8 times bigger than the Palm Jumeirah. But, due to the crisis of 2008, the construction suspended and after 20% reclamation of sand already, Nakheel shifted gears and came up with a new plan.

The Deira Islands are expected now to get completed before 2020 and the main attraction people are excited about is its first large-scale debut, ‘Night Souk’. The Night Souk will be the largest in the world and is planned to have over 5000 shops and over 100 restaurants and cafes.

Another attraction to be added will be the Deira Mall. For those who will need to escape the heat of Dubai and also people who visit Dubai for shopping purpose, Deira Mall will be the right stop. Over 1000 shops will lower the urge to explore anymore and keep the shopping going on.

The World

Developed by the n Nakheel Group and the construction started in 2003, The World had a concept of 300 small islands together forming the world map. The World was another victim of 2008 financial crisis in UAE which halted the construction.

According to a report by NASA, the islands were sinking back in the ocean. The Kleindeinst Group are hoping to revive the project in a major way before 2020. They are planning for the project of The Heart of Europe. Only Greenland, Lebanon is two very developed islands.

The next plan is to offer the culture of the respective place as that of island. The project under Kleindeinst Group is offering underwater villas, five star hotels and even a street covered with man-made snow.

The St. Petersburg Island is believed to become the best honeymoon destination as it’s shaped like a heart as an island and will host couples with the most luxurious way as per the royal standard of Dubai.

Bluewaters Island

The project of constructing a family-friendly man-made Island was was undertaken Meraas Holding. The project started on 2013 and is planned to be completed till 2021. The Dutch Company is known for its work on the Palm Jumeirah and is planning a lot new innovative things on this new Island.

The Island will be free of cars; a dedicated driver less transport system will support the Island. There will be different buildings for different purpose and two five-star hotels too. The main attraction of this Island is going to be the Dubai Eye.

Putting shame to every wheel in the world, the Dubai Eye will be a 210 meter high Ferris wheel. The highest in the world currently is 167.6 meter high High Roller in Las Vegas. The one rotation of the Dubai Eye will take 48 minutes and will pass through a 4D brief too.

The 48 capsules of the wheel will carry 1400 passengers at once and they will be able to witness the whole city along with other an-made Islands from the top. The wheel will be loaded with an 80 meter LED screen in the middle for advertisement and other activities.

The project of Dubai eye is undertaken by Hyundai contracting and Starneth Engineering. The project started in 2015 and is planned to be completed before 2021.

Marsa Al Arab

The Dubai Housing which was a big part in other man-made islands construction planned the project of adding one more man-made island to add 2.2 KM square of coastal area for Dubai. The construction will take place on the either side of Burj Al Arab.

The completion of this project will be around 2021 and the island will consist of over 300 apartments, 140 Villas, a boutique hotel, a marina, waterpark, and a theatre for Cirque Du Soleil show housing 1700 people at once, restaurants etc. The Island will also add 2400 hotel rooms out of which majority is acquired by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum already.
